Common Bacteria Found In Workplace Washrooms

Sometimes, the places that we view as the cleanest, are often just the opposite. Take the workplace washroom, for example. While most employers work to ensure the employee and customer washrooms are as clean as possible, sometimes this isn’t always the case. A clean and well-stocked washroom can make a good impression on a new client, but what is lying below the surface of all of that shine?

We Are Exposed To Bacteria Daily

No matter how clean, functional and operational your workplace washroom is, there might still be a wide range of harmful germs and bacteria present on the hard surfaces where you come in contact with every day. From E coli and salmonella, to influenza, streptococcus and more, we are exposed to more bacteria on a daily basis than we know. And that is in a clean washroom!

A recent study which was published in the well-known industry resource, “Applied and Environmental Microbiology”, looked at the amount of microbes present in workplace washrooms. The researchers discovered traces of more than 77,000 distinct types of bacteria and viruses in the workplace washrooms they studied.

Recontamination

Even after a thorough cleaning, many of the surfaces in workplace washroom don’t remain microbe-free. In fact, within an hour of a thorough cleaning and disinfecting, many workplace washrooms were re-contaminated with microbes and fecal bacteria.
